Winter Makeup Shades: Berry

I’ve never really changed my makeup for the season, but this year I was inspired by a certain Indian actress who pulls off winter shades so perfectly I couldn’t help but want to try them out on my own half-Indian skin.

Obviously my inspiration was Mindy Kaling…

mindy

Can I just be her?

I’ve seen her sport the above lip color on her show, The Mindy Project, and I absolutely LOVED the look of it against her dark skin. Now, I’m definitely not as dark as her, but I think the color can be pulled off an any shade if done correctly! In fact, Elyse said she found a berry color she loves for her skin tone, too! So it’s definitely a trend for everyone.

If you’ve been reading the blog for a while, you may know that I’m obsessed with Sephora Color Lip Last so that was my obvious go-to. Since I’m so comfortable with the brand and product, it made trying such a bold color much less scary, because I knew I liked the way it looked and felt on my lips.

sporting berry lips & my fav new scarf from Zara!

Mine is a little more subtle, especially with the lighting in this picture, but it is a much deeper red than I’m used to and I’m definitely pleased with the way it looks on! It’s perfect for a night out, or even a day at the office if you keep the rest of your look basic.

After determining I loved the berry lip look, I branched out and purchased a berry blush and, no surprise, I love that too! The only thing I don’t like about it is that it’s a cream blush. I have a much harder time putting this stuff on, and definitely prefer powder. The one pictured below is part of the Sephora Collection.

What’s Getting Us Through the Week

Sitting at happy hour on Tuesday I thought to myself, is it REALLY only Tuesday? To say the least, it’s been quite a long week. Here is what has been keeping us going all week:

E says…

1. Seasonal Giving
(sidenote: is that weird?)

20131205-160126.jpg

My little guy requested a toy truck or a wooden shape sorter toy. I found both in one!!

Tis the season! Most people tend to think of themselves or their loved ones during the holiday season which is completely understandable. I for one hit up black Friday sales with entirely myself in mind (oops!… but 50% off J.Crew? I mean come on). However, work has organized an Angel Tree giving session through the salvation army and I was volunteered to support a child with clothes and toys for the holidays. My little guy was less than 2 years old and while shopping for a toddler was a new experience (3T..5T??) when giving those gifts in today I felt really amazing that I have the chance to make this little guy’s hoildays. He’s probably too young to appreciate now, but I spent a lot of time considering what he or his parents might find practical – a 2 in one coat for all seasons for instance! Remember, especially in D.C., there are many less fortunate than yourself to consider. Donate what you can – time, money, clothes, food etc. You’ll be helping them and helping yourself.

2. Passenger – Let Her Go

passenger

I somehow missed this song entirely until it was on The Voice for the first time a few weeks ago. Since then I have it on repeat — the original, covers, acapella… you name it, I’ve been listening to it! Its sort of sad, but also sweet.

S says…

1. “Classy” Shade Revlon Nailpolish

Revlon classy nail polish

I usually go for darker shades in the winter, but I am just in love with this light pink from Revlon. It’s not too much, and totally lives up to the “classy” name.

2. Awesome Workouts

workout woman

It’s me! Yes, I even workout in a skirt…(kidding!)

Not sure what it is about having a frustrating week at work, but it has definitely benefited me at the gym – the perfect place to take out all that aggression! Not going to lie – I’ve been really bad about working out lately, so after Thanksgiving I was determined to get back into my routine and I feel SO.MUCH.BETTER. I definitely have more energy, feel better abut myself, and have even been sleeping better (though not sure those are related…). Here’s to hoping I can keep it up!

& we both agree on..

Sound of Music LIVE!

sound of music

This is TONIGHT and we can’t wait! Carrie Underwood is so amazing and this is an absolute classic movie. It’ll be very interesting and hopefully amazing to watch the live performance!

What’s getting you through to the weekend?

DC December To-Do List!

How is it already December in DC? With Thanksgiving behind us, it is officially Christmas season and I have never been more ready. It would be so easy to sit around and drink hot cider and watch Love Actually on repeat, but there is just so much I want to do around the city in the next month, I don’t even think I’ll even have time to sleep!

Washington DC Christmas Capitol

My main priorities are mostly low-budget (see: free) activities in order to allow me to save up my money for buying awesome gifts this season. Here’s my list of the top few things I can’t wait to do this month:

1. Ice-skating in the Sculpture Garden

20131204-135938.jpg

Seriously how cute is it that they make the Sculpture Garden into an ice rink in the winter? I went last year with my friend Julie and it was so much fun! It was also a lot cheaper than I expected – only a couple bucks to skate and rent! It’s the perfect weekend afternoon activity if you’re downtown. Just make sure to bundle up 🙂

2. Holiday Shopping in Georgetown

There is already no better place to shop and stroll in the District than Georgetown, but it’s even better during the holiday season! The shops have great sales and there’s a perfect mix of regular stores and classic DC-theme stores – everything you need for gift-buying! Be sure to stop in at Dean & DeLuca’s for the especially hard ones to buy for…there’s definitely something for everyone there.

3. Scottish Walk Weekend & Boat Parade in Alexandria

20131204-135932.jpg

E & I went to this last year and it was SO FUN! We’re both pretty obsessed with Alexandria to begin with, but there’s something about the quaintness of Old Town around Christmas that makes it that much better. The Walk & Parade are both this Saturday, December 7th, and are definitely worth going to. Both are completely free and happen right along King Street. Head into Alexandria in the afternoon for the Walk, then do a little shopping and grab some dinner before heading to the harbor for the Boat Parade at night! What could be cuter?

4. ZooLights at the National Zoo

The National Zoo is already free and every night from now until January 1 (with the exception of 12/24, 25, 31) it will be all lit up and festive for the holidays! I didn’t get a chance to go last year and I’ve been kicking myself for it so I can’t wait to head over this year and see all the lights AND the animals!

What’s on your to-do list this December?

Color Crush: Oxblood

Can I please just have everything in this color? The name ‘oxblood’ is vague (and slightly scary…) but I see it as somewhere near a deep red / burgundy. Whatever it is, I’m absolutely obsessed with it for the fall and winter seasons. See some of my favorite items in this color below:

Cynthia Rowley Shoulder Bag

oxblood bag

I’m absolutely dying to find this for actual sale somewhere after seeing it on a random website. The color with the gold and tassel accents is everything I’ve been dreaming of in a new bag. You can find me on eBay for the next million years trying to dig this up somewhere.

Chinese Laundry Booties from Piperlime
unnamed

Adorable twist on the classic bootie look. I especially love the gold touch on the toe!

Skinny Jeans from ASOS

oxblood pants

Oxblood is the new black. Or at least when it comes to skinny jeans in my book. These are adorable and could go with almost anything, but are way more fun than plain black skinnies. This ASOS pair is pretty cheap, but I also picked up a great pair from Kohl’s earlier this season!

Kozart Necklace from Aldo Shoes

oxblood jewelry

American Rag Jacket from Macy’s

oxblood jacket

How much do I need this adorable thing? So, so much.

& of course…

Oxblood Nails

oxblood nails

Duh. This has been my all-time favorite nail color for a while – classic, sexy, and fun. A great winter alternative to my signature bright red.

Excuse me while I go hit up a mall immediately and buy anything i see in this color. Happy shopping!

Pumpkin Butter Cookies

Looking for the quickest, most fall-ish cookies ever to get you through the final few weeks before winter rolls in full-steam ahead? Trying to get in all of your pumpkin fix before switching over to apple and cinnamon for Christmas season? Well, we’ve got the perfect receipe for ya here!

20131120-105040.jpg

I’ll openly admit that these aren’t my favorite cookies, but they’ll definitely do in a pinch! They’re simple, classic, and definitely seasonal. Sometimes I get wrapped up in trying to push so much flavor, ingredients, and layers into my baked goods (see Red Velvet Brownies for example) that I forget how delicious a simple cookie can be. This recipe is one of those rare times I went back to basics, and I definitely didn’t regret it. I think the lack of pictures will prove that these went fast! They were the perfect quick treat to whip up for my coworkers after one of our large events, and go great with a warm cup of coffee or tea (…well, everything goes great with a warm cup of tea in my book…but whatever). The only concern with these cookies is to be careful not to over-bake since the enjoyment really comes from the gooey-ness of them!

20131120-105320.jpg

Pumpkin Butter Cookies

Happy simple eating for now! I’ll be returning soon with a more rich and chocolatey recipe for you all (think chocolate caramel brownies….mmmm).

PSA: Woodwick Candles

EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT THESE THINGS IMMEDIATELY.

We just realized that apparently not everyone knows about the wooden wick candles and felt that it was our responsibility to share this amazing discovery with everyone here. What is more soothing than the light and smell of a lit candle? Oh, just one that also CRACKLES like a real fire.

woodwick

These things have seriously changed my life. I’m pretty picky about candles so I generally stick to a couple of classic, signature scents. But these wooden-wick candles have made me totally throw that out of the window. My personal favorite is “Bonfire Nights” from Nature’s Wick – sold at Target. Nature’s Wick also sells layered candles that include 3 distinctive scents of the season.

bonfire nights

tricolor candle

There is something about the crackle that adds so much to the ambiance and feel of the room that it almost doesn’t even matter what the candle smells like. I practically forced all my friends to buy them at T.J. Maxx in Georgetown and I haven’t heard a complaint or regret from them yet. So get out to a T.J. Maxx or Target right now and get yourself one before it gets too cold to leave the house!

California Dreamin – San Diego Style!

Hello from back on the east coast! I just returned from the most AH-MAZE-ING trip to San Diego! Between experiencing a new city, meeting so many new people, and getting incredible career experience, I can absolutely say it was one of the best trips of my life.

san diego collage

We hopped on a plane at an absurdly early hour at DCA, and 6 hours later rolled up to this place:

20131113-074104.jpg

Yeah…WHOA. This property is the most beautiful and secluded resort I’ve ever been to (um, and it’s PINK!). I even woke up extra early on a couple of the days to just walk around and soak it all in. As you all know, I’m a big fan of the winter and colder weather, but honestly no one could have been unhappy in this 70 degree paradise. There was a golf course, a pool, and several delicious restaurants right on site. Check out some more pictures of the property below:

Even these hallways are unreal

20131113-073900.jpg

The courtyard outside my room

20131113-073923.jpg On Thursday we took a little break and ate lunch next to the beach and then ventured down to play in the sand and stick our feet in the water for a little bit. It’s always nice when we have a little time to explore the city we’re in…and when we’re relaxed enough about the event to enjoy it! Growing up right on the Atlantic, I had never been to the Pacific Ocean so this was particularly exciting for me!

Lunch with a view!

Once Friday rolled around, we really had to buckle down and “gets to steppin'” as we say around the office. So we spent most of the day in the staff office eating chocolate covered oreos and running through seating changes and other logistics. However, we couldn’t even complain about that seeing as how this was our view from the office balcony:

20131113-073602.jpg

20131113-073939.jpg

20131113-073759.jpg

Definitely broke a record for most of these eaten in a 4-day period….

Oh, and as for as the event itself – well, check us out:

Dessert Reception to wrap up the night

What an amazing opportunity to travel to another part of the country and learn alongside and bond with so many people who are just as passionate as you are about certain issues. My head was in the clouds the whole time – and I still can’t believe how lucky I am! We even got to meet Senator Cruz, Governor Scott Walker, and Scott Rasmussen! I learned SO much from each of my coworkers, and I can’t wait until the next big conference! Until next time, San Diego!

Tuesday Shoesday

We’re back with another addition of Tuesday Shoesday! It’s turning into winter quick, which means the holidays are coming up…so obviously we have to update our shoe collections to reflect! Here are the pairs we’ve currently got our eyes on:

E picks

Hamil Wedge from Vince Camuto

11.12 e wedges

Something about the hidden platform, gold edged heel, wooden wedge. I’m obsessed with these beauties and they have a 5 star review! Heels above 4 inches are too tall for me day to day, and these sit at a comfortable (sometimes) 3.3! They’d be super cute with a skirt or jeans.. and I need them in my life.

Hither T-Strap Pumps from Anthropologie

11.12 e pumps

In case your mama never told you, T straps are by far the most comfortable shoe. They’re what dancers wear to keep their foot in place, and these are just too cute for words. The sparkly bows…I just want to have them on my feet so I can look down and smile all day!

Benissa Booties from Anthropologie

e booties 1112

First off, they named it a shootie. A SHOOTIE. So clever. Anyways, these little guys are dressy and basic, comfy looking and the dipped portion with the brown suede will be perfect all winter.

S picks

Crown Vintage Boots from DSW

20131112-160439.jpg

I just got these beauts from DSW at Pentagon City! I’m so excited to finally have boots that are cute, but also practical. I’ve recently become very anti-rain boot since the last pair I had got destroyed and made my feet sticky and smelly (TMI? oops!) Though these aren’t traditional rain boots, they should hold up in mild DC rain and snow, without being too sticky or difficult. Easy to throw on when running out the door – exactly what I need on a rainy morning. They also only ran me $60 after a coupon so I don’t even feel bad if they only last a season or two!

Melvinia Red Pumps from Aldo Shoes

11.12 s pumps

Ummm…they are bright red with gold accents….you couldn’t have not seen this one coming from me! Red is my absolute favorite color and I love the gold accents with this – I can just imagine them now with a little black dress. Dying.

Dolce Vita “Kana” Pump from Nordstom

11.12 s pumps2

Snakeskin…another classic S move. But I just love the combo with that tan color…and I guess I’m falling for the T-Strap too! But can you blame us?

What shoes are you currently coveting?

Fall 2013 Fashion Must Haves…or so we think!

Its that time of year again… or well into it by now.. its FALL! (At least here in DC, where we’re still getting 70 degree weather occasionally)

There are a few key things I’ve been lusting after (and a few purchases I’ve made) recently! What have you been needing in your closet?

1. A Leather Circle Skirt

Do you like?

Available at DKYN

a longer version for the day/winter

2. Booties.. not really a new story here but I wore my first pair out!

They really come in any heel size, but they’re incredibly comfortable and chic addition to your outfit. The heel fell off of my favorite tan pair:(

3. Chunky Sweaters with Tight Skirts

From H&M

h&m

4. Holiday season dresses.. for work & play

Here are some of my favorites from ASOS

5. Winter Coats.. its getting chilly round here!

via ASOS

Asos

for going out

via JCREW

One of each of the above and I should be set for a bit, don’t you think??
