Weekend Wrap-up: 23rd Birthday Edition!

Friday was my 23rd birthday (cue Blink 182 ‘What’s My Age Again?’) and as it was my first one in DC, I was ready to go all-out with a weekend of friends, fun, and celebrating! And that is exactly what I did. (Disclaimer: This post is full of awkward pictures of me…yikes)

Now that I’m in the working world, I can’t exactly take off or do whatever I want on my birthday – if it falls during the week, I still have to go into the office. However, since I love my job so much, I didn’t even mind. Plus, I got to hang out with my awesome coworkers, and we even went out to a great Mexican place around the corner for a celebratory lunch.

Yes, this happened.

After work, my friend and I met my roommates are Capitol City Brewing Company at Metro Center for happy hour specials and dinner. I was told I had to try the Hefeweizen, which was on tap for $3.50 a glass and it was probably one of the best beers I’ve ever had. So light, so refreshing! Cap City has this thing where they give you soft pretzels instead of bread or chips and salsa as an appetizer and it’s pretty much why I go there. I could literally just eat a bunch of the pretzels and be good. But I always try to order food too…since just eating the free pretzels and beer would be rude and weird.

Jason, Elinor, and I

We then migrated to China Town to meet up with Elyse, her friend from high school, and a couple of my other friends from work at La Tasca. Soooo much Sangria ensued…and then I even got a mini cake!

Happy birthday to me!

Sunday was my good friend Sophia’s birthday (cue Taylor Swift’s ’22’) so it was natural for us, since we have the same group of liberty-loving friends, to have a joint party on Saturday night. We spent the day running around and getting ready. We made specialty drinks and cookies for the crowd and everyone really seemed to enjoy themselves (or at least I like to assume they did). It wasn’t like anything special or crazy happened, but it was just one of those nights you remember as being really awesome. I wish we took pictures at the party, but I guess that’s the price we pay for having too much fun…oh well!  Guess we’ll just have to do it all over again soon – housewarming party, anyone? For lack of pictures from Saturday, here is a picture of the birthday girls a couple weeks back:

Check out that Sephora lipstick! 🙂

It’s so crazy how you leave high school and you think your best years are in the past, then you go to college and you’re convinced that those are the best years of your life. But I’ve been in DC for a year now and after this weekend, I’m positive that my best years are ahead of me. I’m so grateful for all my friends in DC who were so good to me all weekend and I can’t wait to see what life has in store for the now older, wiser me!

What’s Getting Us Through the Week!

We’re back after a couple weeks (okay, months…fail!) hiatus with what’s getting us through the week! And this time we’re puttin’ in a little more detail to make up for our absence and total blogger fails.

Elyse says…

This week, I don’t know why, but it’s been very odd. First there was happy hours, then power outages, then staying at work until 830 and walking through Georgetown.. just not my typical thing. This week, there are two things that I look forward to throughout each work day.. and they’re what’s getting me through the week!

1. Outdoor DC Happy Hours.
Maybe because its finally nice but not oppressively hot, maybe it’s because in my new apartment I can stroll 3 blocks and be at the bars.. but suddenly outdoor happy hours are my absolute favorite thing. Cafe Dupont as seen above, has outdoor chairs, couches, standing tables..a fire pit! And a perfect view of the circle! It’s constantly crowded, music playing, happy post-work people. It’s just an infectious buzz. Mad Hatter on the other side of the circle also has an outdoor space (who knew!) and $4 frozen mango margaritas… uhh YES.
2. Summer TV Series!

Admittedly, I have poor TV and movie taste. I’m all about chick flicks and dramas. In that light, two of my favorite shows are back for their summer seasons! I’ve been waiting for so long…

The Newsroom – yeah its  Sorkin writing, everyone bashes it. Too scripted..blahblah. I personally wish my life involved soliloquies and drama the way this show does. It seems to be getting a little weird..but if you haven’t seen it yet it’s worth  logging into and taking a gander.

Suits – HAVE YOU WATCHED THIS YET?!? Seriously suits is amazing. Another office environment that I can only hope mine mirrors someday. Here’s the premise: Genius guy with photographic memory pretends to have gone to Harvard, works at a law firm and changes lives. You’re sold aren’t you… This season is getting rather steamy, but everyone who watches a few episodes—guys, girls, my mom—all love it! Knowing that I could curl up and watch this week’s episode after work last night made the day that much better.

Shianne says…

It’s my birthday week (tomorrow I turn 23 – YAY!) and the week before I move (metro life – DOUBLE YAY!) so I’ve been trying to prep for all that while still trying to balance a full work schedule. Here’s what’s helped me through:

1. Greek Yogurt

I have heard countless people rave and rave about Greek Yogurt for so long now and I have always been a non-believer. I’ve even given it a few chances and still nothing. However, this week I accidentally picked up a Greek Yogurt Parfait from Au Bon Pain instead of regular and something in my taste buds must have changed, because I LOVED it. I have subsequently purchased Greek Yogurt every morning since and even added a little granola for an extra kick. And maybe it’s subconscious, but it’s actually revving me up in the mornings as well! I’m not sure how long this phase will last, but I’m really enjoying it while it does!

2. Twitter

This is a totally weird thing, but I’ve had a pretty fun week on Twitter! I’ve been pretty active on my personal account as well as the Liberty on Less account and my thoughts are apparently being well-received. Our blog is now being followed by Marshall’s Brand and a couple other big names on Twitter – which is AWESOME. (If you’re not already following us – you can do so here.)

Personally, as you all know, I’m SUPER into politics. It’s almost exclusively what I tweet about. Well, that and puppies. With Obama’s speech this week, I’ve been even more active than usual and in turn I’ve been getting more retweets than usual – including some from my favorite non-profit advocacy groups as well as one Congressman! I’m not necessarily a Comms person, but it is nice to know that some people you look up to to make changes are seeing what you’re saying and agree with you!

& we both agree on…

Yes, chilling. Is that a weird thing to say if you’re not a 14 year old boy? Well, that’s the only word I can think to describe our weeks right now. Each night this week, we’ve both been keeping it super low key – happy hours, mindless television, baseball games, and hanging out with friends. This is especially relevant since we’ve both had fairly stressful weeks at work so doing these things have totally kept us from losing our marbles after hours or caving under the pressure! Even if it’s just sitting with a coffee or some ice cream (have you tried Larry’s? So many flavors!) spending some time to relax and unwind after work with friends will always be one of the best ways to bring you back to reality and keep you from burning out. Just try to keep it light – harping on the stress and complaining to friends will only make it worse…so clear your mind, get a frozen margarita, and relax (not to say that a good venting sesh every now and then doesn’t work either).

As Cole Swindell puts it in his new song:

“Pour it on easy now don’t spill a bit
Nothing but time tonight, let’s get to killin’ it
Long as I’m rockin’ with you girl
You know I’m cool with
Just chillin’ it”

Are these lame? Maybe. But they’re what’s getting us through the week! How about you?

DGS Brunch!

This weekend, S and I met up in the DuPont area with every intention of reviewing a totally different brunch location. The original location required a reservation (who knew!) so we’ll have to review it another time…luckily right across the circle is the lovely DGS Delicatessen, which we’ve also been meaning to try.

There was a really short wait (less than 10 minutes – which is crazy at 12:30 on a Sunday!), but we opted to sit at the bar anyway since it was super cute. The atmosphere was perfect for brunch! Really casual, not too loud or too quiet, and quality food….we couldn’t ask for anything more. And we didn’t have to! Next thing we knew, they had a customer with a baby stroller coming in so they asked us to move down just a couple seats to the higher bar to accommodate the stroller. No problem, right? Even though we totally didn’t mind doing it, they gave us each a glass of champagne on the house for the trouble, and we’re not ones to argue with an offer like that!

I have no idea what kind of champagne it was but it was slightly different than the standard brunch champagne and seriously delicious! I really regret not asking what it was because now I’m afraid I won’t be able to find it again (unless I go back…which is actually pretty likely). Just when we thought it couldn’t get better, our food came – and it looked like this…

Challah French Toast

Patatas Bravas

Perfect portions and excellent presentation! We couldn’t help but fire up Instagram and take these photos to show you…though it was hard to resist just diving in right away! Definitely worth a trip if you’re looking for a cute & casual brunch place!

Mint Cookies

For those of you that follow us on Instagram you may have seen the teaser picture of some cookies I posted last weekend and you might be wondering where those cookies have ended up. The answer is in the bellies of myself, my friends, and my coworkers. OOPS. However, I did salvage enough to take a few finished product pics and share the recipe with you all!

These cookies are some of my brother’s and my roommate’s favorite since they are mint flavored and deliciousssss. The green color is totally optional, but it does make them way more fun!

What you’ll need:
1 package of sugar cookie mix
1 stick butter or margarine (softened)
1 egg
1 tablespoon mint extract
Green food coloring
8 oz creme de menthe chips
8 oz chocolate chips

1. Combine softened butter, egg, and cookie mix in a large bowl

2. Add mint extract, food coloring, and chips
3. Mix until fully combined

4.  Roll into balls and place in fridge or freezer for cooling (at least 12 hours in fridge, at least 4 in freezer)
5. Pop them into the oven at 350 degrees – bake for 8-10 minutes and enjoy!

It’s as simple as that!

If the recipe looks familiar it is because I did post it here earlier (cheating, I know) – BUT I made a few updates and I wanted to share them with you all! I have a feeling I’ll be doing this fairly often  since I’m always looking to improve my recipes. This is especially due to the fact that I’ve made a few cookies over the past few weeks that have just been so delicious that I’m now finding it hard for my old favorites to even compare so it’s about time I do some updating – let me know if you have any suggestions!

NYC Recap!

Remember how I said that I was going to NYC a few weeks ago? I forgot to update you on the trip! If you follow me on instagram you’ve probably seen most of these but there is always a story behind every picture…

First I was there for work… in Jersey City which is ALMOST NYC.. as you can see from the beautiful view

View from the Goldman Sacs building

Finally, we united in Sty Town and headed out into the night!

The night began!

We went to Houstan Hall in the west village.  Imagine a german beer hall FILLED to the brim.

look at the size of those guys!

The crew!!!!

As the night progressed….

The next day we woke up bright and early and took the subway to Williamburg for a large food fest with a fantastic view!

Seeing as it was Michelles birthday, we hit up a little Sushi place around the block from her apartment

Birthday Sushi!

And headed out into the night for some dancing…which somehow I got no pictures of, just instagram videos which I’m not entirely sure how to share just yet.

The next morning was brunch at the Sunburnt Cow (clearly named for me as I got burned just sitting around brooklyn) If you can imagine, is a tiny bar with fantastic breakfast and lunch items –think steak and eggs– with bottomless drinks and all Australian men servers.

The rest of the afternoon was spent walking, lounging, saying goodbyes, and grabbing dinner at this adorable 24/7 restaurant in the east village called 7A Cafe that I’ve now managed to go to every single time I’ve visited new york this year. I’m claiming it as my spot!

The next morning it was time to head back to Penn Station, but not before I got caught in a torrential downpour

No cabs to be found!

Ahh NYC… always a great visit. I think the friends are half the fun though.

Magna Carta Holy Grail

Yes, I am the same girl who usually posts about cookies and make-up…but today I’m posting about something a littttttle different 🙂

This post may not appeal to many of our readers – but Jay-Z’s new album just came out and I’m bursting with so much excitement that I can’t help but to post about it up here for the world (or at least our followers) to see! I have officially been listening to ‘Magna Carta Holy Grail’ for 48  hours straight and I finally feel prepared to review it. For those of you who know me even just a little, you know I am absolutely OBSESSED with Jay-Z…and pretty much all rap music in general (contrary to what you may think by the looks of me!). I know all the words to 99 problems and will frequently bust out in song when the time is right (and sometimes when it’s not…). I don’t know what it is about rap music, but I just love it! I was so excited for this album to come out and let me tell you – it does not disappoint.

I won’t go so far as to say it is as good or better than Watch the Throne, because let’s be real, Jay and ‘Ye together is just  a unique magic that you can’t ever replicate. HOWEVER, this album does have some great collaborations, including the song “Holy Grail’ with Justin Timberlake that I’ve listened to about a hundred times already. Some of my other favorites include: BBC, Heaven, and Picasso Baby.

Happy listening!

Maine Lobstaaa

My 4th of July was very different from Shiannes. I used the free vacation time from the office to fly home to NH and spend some quality down time with the family and the dogs. On the actual 4th, my mom and I decided to head up to the sea — stopping at Portsmouth, NH, Ogunqiut and Kennebunk ME.

I had not seen the ocean in a very long time

If you know me well, you know I don’t eat lobster.. but my moms looked pretty delish!

picture perfect scene on the ride up

Home is so relaxing…I found myself sort of home sick to leave. But I especially could not bear to part with these guys:

friends fur-ever

I’m getting nostalgic just looking at pictures! Its terrifically unfair that jobs give you only a certain number of days off… I miss my summer vacations more than you know today.

Weekend Wrap-Up: 4th of July

Hope you all had a great holiday weekend! As it was my first Independence Day in DC, I can definitely say it was everything I imagined & more! First I should admit that a lot of these pictures are stolen from my friend Sophia whose phone takes ridiculously amazing pics – even in the dark! Luckily, she is nice enough to send them all to me so I can Instagram them to death and post them up here! You’ll also notice that I’ve recently learned some new picture tools and I maaaay have gone a little overboard…but it’s just so fun!

Sophia and I on the roof of my office – that’s the Capitol in the background 🙂

I started the 4th off at a BBQ with some old and new friends where we drank beer, played cornhole, and hung out up on the roof (classic!) and it was a lot of fun! I love being in a city full of young professionals – it seems like I’m always meeting new people, which is awesome! After a couple hours of hanging out there, Sophia and I walked over to my office for our Independence Day Celebration. This party was definitely as epic as it was described to be! We had Famous Dave’s catered food and specialty drinks named “Sunny Afternoon” and “A Walk in the Countryside” (I much preferred the first – but hey, it was an open bar so I had to try em both!). After mingling for a while and meeting everyone’s family & friends, it was time for fireworks. We had an INCREDIBLE view and the weather was perfect! Just when I think my job can’t get any better they throw this at me….

My 4th in review – pretty epic!

I was able to sleep in a little bit on Friday before my family came into town and I was in full-on tour guide mode! My oldest cousin had been to DC recently, but my other cousin, uncle, aunt, and her parents had never been so it was my duty to show them how amazing this city is – all in 2 days! It was especially important since my aunt’s parents were visiting all the way from INDIA….so I had to prove that America was as awesome as they believe it to be…and that DC isn’t always as much of a mess as it seems to be on the news! Due to the blistering heat and my guests’ restrictions, we decided that a walking tour was out of the question. So Saturday afternoon I finally got to go on one of those crazy Big Bus tours I’ve always secretly wanted to go on! We literally rode ALL OVER the city, taking stops at some of the more interesting locations to get a closer look. I wouldn’t recommend the tour to anyone able to walk, as it was expensive, but it was definitely worth the money for our group! Also – just note how adorable my cousins are in the picture below – presh!!

ultimate tourists!

ultimate tourists!

I hope that between all the BBQs and fireworks this weekend everyone had a chance to stop and think about what Independence Day is really about! Not to get too sentimental, but sometimes I really wonder how I got lucky enough to live in a country where freedom is cherished and celebrated. Having a father who was an immigrant and still having a lot of family overseas always helps me remember this point. Sure, every country has their issues – but I’d say we’ve got it pretty good over here and I sure as hell wouldn’t want to be anywhere else!

Creed on what he would do if he won the lottery…anyone else miss this show as much as I do? (Thanks, E, for the link 🙂 )

An incredible weekend of family, friends, and fireworks – what more could you want in life?

The Bouquet of Three Award

So we were recently nominated for The Bouquet of Three Award! Thanks so much to Christine over at Ms. Chris Creations. If you love food, you NEED to check our her blog because she has our mouths watering every time we even browse the homepage!

We have to admit, when we first started this blog we did not think it would be this fun or successful! We created it on a whim, part of each of us thinking it would die out after a couple weeks…but here we are months later being recognized by other bloggers for what we do – it makes us want to keep going!

The Rules:

1. Thank the person who nominated you and link them in your post
2. Write 7 things about yourself
3. Nominate other bloggers for the award & let them know by posting on their pages

7 things about us!
1. S&E – This YouTube video is basically why we are friends. Look at the little hands! And giant eyeballs! It’s just too cute! This, along with some other YouTube gems (surprised kitty, mom stole all my Halloween candy) pretty much got us through our final days of Stats senior year.
2. E – I have no games on my phone. Its really weird, I see everyone playing candy crush and temple run etc but I’ve just yet to download them. I think this means my soul is really 95 years old.
3. S – I’m convinced I’m part vampire. Not in the Twilight kinda way, but in the I really like dark places, rain, and cold weather kinda way. I generally want nothing to do with anything summery or sunshiney – but I’ll be that girl taking walks, iceskating, and running around downtown with a hot chocolate, a scarf, and a big smile all winter.
4. S&E – We both work in a different state (district) than where we live. Aka Elyse lives in the city and works in Arlington and Shianne lives in Arlington and works in the district. (So backwards, right? But we’re both too stubborn to move…)
5. E – When it comes to doing things that affect only me.. I’m really bad at motivation. This sounds backwards, I know, but basically it means that if you want to do something I had no interest in, I’ll usually play along, but if I..say…need to go to the DMV to get my car registered but really don’t want to waste a beautiful Saturday afternoon in line…(ha too close to reality).. I wont go. It’s bad. I need to work on self motivation!
6. S – I’m really good at pretending to be productive and organized. I keep a calendar that is color-coded and am the queen of lists, spreadsheets, and clean email inboxes – but it usually only sticks for a couple weeks. However, I have been on quite the streak lately and am doing really well with my new methods of organization and I’m really excited about it!
7. S&E – We both have slight obsessions with Beyonce & Jay-Z. Elyse wishes she were the former and Shianne the latter. We don’t know what it is about them, but the music, the style, the swag – it’s everything we adore…and more! We’re so jealz of baby Blue Ivy!

Our nominations:
1. Once in a Blue Spoon
2. Birds Feather Blog (Bonus! One of S’s good friends runs the blog! xO)
3. Love and Lace
4. Reflections of a Foodie
5. Hello Homebody
6. The Fashion Huntress
7. Chez Sasha
8. The Fancy Pants Report

So thank you again to Ms. Chris! And to everyone who reads our blog – we’ll try to keep it interesting for you all!

xO S&E

Prepping for my first 4th of July in DC!

If you live in DC, you know how big of a deal the 4th of July is here. Or at least you’ve HEARD about how big a deal it is…but maybe you haven’t experienced it yet.
This year will be my first Independence Day in the nation’s capital – and I could not be more excited! We have a huge party every year for the 4th of July at work and apparently it is the absolute best time. We’re right on Capitol Hill so the party is hosted on the roof – with a 360 view of the city & fireworks in every direction!
Since I’ll technically be at work, I won’t want to be too flashy – but I also have a lot more leeway than I would on a regular work day. I’m thinking about pairing a simple red dress (like the one pictured below) with a white heel (also below) and maybe some blue accessories?
If you won’t be at work – and instead enjoying the fireworks in a more laid-back atmosphere, I highly recommend the American flag print shorts and/or sequined, white, peplum top!
4th of July
A couple of the items I’m particularly obsessed with are:
1. Simple red tank top from H&M – it just looks like it would drape so well!
2. Blue Bow from Etsy- great way to contain and also style my crazy & long waves!
3. White Heels from Rock&Republic – so classy & chic!
And, of course, don’t forget my favorite accessory – red lipstick!
What will you be wearing to the fireworks?
