Choo Choo!

I’m blogging… from a train.

What! Technology is ridiculously awesome sometimes.

This week at work has been insane and I am rewarding myself and my 25 hours of overtime in the past 2 weeks with a trip to NYC! New York.. the Big Apple… oh yeah I was there yesterday for a work thing. But this time its to see some of my best friends and celebrate a birthday!

Just a quick update on some of the things going on… aka my shopping expeditions of the week

you like?

Clearly I was just having too much fun in the Zara dressing room. Also I just found that I have the Hitch DVD in my computer. WINNNNN

Updates from the city later!!

“Sail” la Vie

If you’re from New England (woo go Bruins!) or you’ve walked into The Lucky Knot on King Street in Alexandria, you know the brand Kiel James Patrick and their adorably preppy accessories. Sarah, KJP’s girl has one of the most fabulous blogs out there!

Do you see a theme showing up here?

Anyways, one of my best friends from NH has just started her adventure of a summer interning for Kiel and the crew, and has started a blog about her adventures which I want to share — it’ll make you wish you had gone into the Fashion industry, and that you were anywhere near an ocean. And a lake. And had a a rowboat…

SEA you later.

I know I’ll be jealous of her adventures!

Summer Trend: NEON

I can’t believe it’s already summer! Or, at least it is in DC. With temperatures up towards 90 consistently, I’m ditching the spring gear completely and gearing up for a long, hot DC summer! And I’m doing it with the help of a few bright new wardrobe additions.
I’m not usually one for fashion trends, but I’ve been trying to branch out and embrace some new things lately and one thing I’ve noticed this summer is NEON EVERYWHERE. And it makes perfect sense – when else could you wear electric green or hot pink and get away with it? Only in summer. Sure, too much neon can hurt your eyes, but when styled properly it can create a fun and fresh new look. Here are some of the products I’ve got my eye on for the season:
Neons for Summer
Neons look great with a nice tan and are just plain fun!You can mix them together or use them as an accent to a simple, solid outfit.  Some of these products are kinda a splurge – but I tried to keep it semi-reasonable and most of these stores have some pretty great sales so there’s definite potential to get a great deal.
Will you be indulging in some neon this summer?

Currently Listening: Something for Everyone

So this is another music post…but I can’t help it! I’m no music expert but I do have really eclectic taste. After completely wearing out Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” track, I HAD to download new music this weekend. These are all really great and coincidentally happy sing-a-longs that have been amping me up during my normally drowsy morning routine. Here’s what I’ve been listening to on repeat:

1. Fool for you – Cee Lo Green
If you’re feeling something a little different

Yeah…what? Cee Lo? For real? Yes. It’s real. And it’s incredible.

2. Slow Down – Selena Gomez
If you want to dance

Selena has done it again. Another great sing and dance-along track that just puts me in a great mood. Perfect for a night out…or a night of dancing around your bedroom….not that I just did that tonight or anything…

3. Popular Song – Mika
If you’re feeling something fun & light

MIKA seems to come out of the woodwork every once in a while with something absolutely awesome. From ‘Love Today’ to ‘Celebrate,’ I’m always pleasantly surprised when I hear a new MIKA jam and the same goes for this one!

4. Aw Naw – Chris Young
If you’re feeling country

It wouldn’t be a complete Shianne list if there weren’t at least a little country on it. This song is a standard fun country song about partying. But just a warning – like “Boys Round Here,” it’s REALLY country (as if you couldn’t tell by the name) – so this may be one of those country songs that will not translate well for non-country fans.

5. Crazy Beautiful – Andy Grammer
If you’re feeling cheesy and romantic

I’ve had a weird thing for Andy Grammer music ever since I saw him perform at UR forever ago. His music is just SUPER happy…which I love! This particular song is really lovey-dove and cheesy, but it’s also equally cute and fun!

I don’t know what is in the air lately, but I’m really feeling these super-happy tunes! No sad, crooning country hits for me…at least not for a while! What have you been listening to?

Metro Center Shopping Day

I know we showed you other rain flats, but really these cuties from forever21 would do the trick too!

This morning was one of our monthly alumni gatherings, but afterwards I was downtown with some time to kil…whats a girl to do?

Well lucky for me, right around the corner there happens to be a row of shopping including some of my favorites : TJ Maxx, H&M, Zara, Forever21… you get the idea.

I’m in need of some work dresses, and in the process took some shots of cute things around the stores.

H&M skater dress? Reminds me of The londoner and her tromping around london outfits

This dress was about 4 sizes too big, but that allows it to become blousy and long enough for work with a jacket!

ended up not taking this one, just a little too odd for my height, dont you think?

I NEED more bright skirts for work. H&M is having an amazing sale currently.. I ended up going up a size as you can see this guy is a little tight for work but highly suggest running down to h&m and grabbing some!

I can’t decide if these are beyond cute or if I’m going crazy but they’re available at Zara!

A successful afternoon if I do say so myself.. Its getting HOT in DC — a perfect excuse to go out there and shop till you drop in those lovely airconditioned stores 😉

White Chocolate Butterscotch Cookies

Happy Saturday, folks! I’ve had quite the productive day already so I figured I would keep it going with a new blog post about…..what else – COOKIES!!

Office birthdays are one of the many pleasures of the working world. It’s a time where you get to break up your day with a little celebration – and likely some treats 🙂 This Friday we celebrated a coworker’s birthday by ordering Chinese and I baked some cookies for dessert. I’m back into the lighter cookies again with a white chocolate butterscotch recipe. The recipe comes from Lil Luna – another one of my favorite baking blogs! These are super sugary and sweet and seriously delicious!

Here’s what you’ll need:

– 1 cup sugar
– 1 cup brown sugar
– 1/2 cup butter (softened)
– 1/2 cup oil (I prefer canola)
– 2 eggs
– 1 tsp salt
– 1 tsp baking soda
– 1 tsp baking powder
– 1 tsp vanilla
– 1 tsp almond extract
– 3 cups flour
– 6 oz white chocolate chips
– 6 oz butterscotch chips

1. Cream together butter, oil, sugars

2. Beat in eggs, vanilla, almond extract

3. Add in dry ingredients

4. Fold in chips

5. Roll into balls and place in fridge or freezer for at least 12 hours

6. Bake at 350 degrees for 6-8 minutes

Since I make my cookies so small, the best part is, this recipe ends up making like….a HUNDRED cookies. Okay, maybe more like 3 dozen. But seriously, I’ll have cookies for days after this! Try them out and let me know what ya think!

DC Date Night!

If you’re currently attached, you know that dates in D.C. come in a multitude of flavors. If you’re single, I know you’ve been tindering, OKCupid-ing and meeting cute people on the metro so this applies to you too!

D.C. has the wonderful plus that it is young, fun and people tend to still be a wee bit southern so dates are still the norm. Lets say you’re past the part of just drinks, and dinner and a movie is just so..blah.

As someone who’s been living the DC couple life for almost a year now, let me say that summer is the BEST time for fun and different date ideas..and if no date are around they’re equally if not more fun with your friends!

So I give you —

my top summer date ideas:

1. Boating. I don’t mean you go on your significant others yacht, although if that’s an option by all means jump on that..and invite me! You’ll notice tons of paddle boats in the tidal basin and kayaks in the Potomac around this time of year and they’re completely rent-able! Jacks *Ahem* I mean now the “Key Bridge” Boat house is  right off of the main drag in Georgetown and offers hours of rental options. They have two person kayaks.. if you two can coordinate. But lets be honest, racing and a little competition makes the date more fun anyways.

I see my office in this picture!

2. Biking. If you remember my Capitol Bike Share post you’ll know that I’m a huge fan of this. I think I’ll be buying a capitol bike share membership for the summer so I can cruise around as I please! But the monuments at night.. seriously perfect date.

not a great photo but you get the idea

3. Free movies in the park. Many of the D.C. neighborhoods, especially some of the newly transitioning ones offer free movies on the grass for people to come down and enjoy.

There is :

Screen on the Green
Noma Summer Screen
and my personal favorite (mostly because they have that awesome ice skating rink during the winter)
Capitol Waterfront Movies

4. H Street Country Club Mini Golf. I mentioned this here.

Just some ideas! Have any of your own? Let me know and I’ll give it a try.

Shopping for Summer

Soooo…I’m guilty…I went shopping AGAIN this weekend. There’s just something about strolling through downtown DC shops (or Pentagon City Mall) on a Sunday afternoon that is just so relaxing. I’m still in that summer denial phase, where I have almost NO clothes for the season….so I’m slowly but surely trying to fix that situation as summer inches closer and closer. Here are my latest finds to help me prepare for the sweltering DC heat (and some makeup that just makes me feel better in general :))

1. Subtle Snakeskin Sandals- Ann Taylor Loft

My general MO in the summer is to buy a couple sets of sandals and just wear them out until the end of the season and rinse and repeat for the next year. Because they get worn out so easily I’m always trying to find a pair that are relatively cheap, but will also be cute and match a large majority of my clothes. These snakeskin sandals from Ann Taylor Loft are my first sandal purchase this season and I am SO excited about them! They’re super cute, go with everything, and did I mention they are SNAKE SKIN ahhh! Trekking the hot streets of DC won’t be so bad with these by my side….or…um..on my feet!

2. Yellow Tanktop – Banana Republic

I’ve had my heart set on this tanktop since I first laid eyes on it about a month ago. I waited and waited for a sale or coupon, and finally it came. With a 50% off Banana Republic coupon in hand, I headed to the store to finally pick up this gorgeous summer top. It’s the prefect color for my skintone and is really light and airy so I won’t get super sweaty and gross in it. Also, it can be dressed up or down, depending on how you style it. I can’t wait to wear it around to brunches, bars, and wherever else the wind takes me this summer!

3. Sephora Collection Colorful Blush in Coral Crush – Sephora

My cousin informed me that the makeup you’re placing directly on your face (i.e. foundation, blush, etc.) is the most important as far as quality goes…which makes sense when you think about it. So I returned once again to my new favorite place – Sephora and went directly for the “Sephora Collection” brand – which isn’t too expensive, but is still great quality (only $14 a pop!). I decided to try out the coral color for something a little different and natural for summer and I am LOVING it so far! Of course I’ll keep a classic pink blush around for most occasions, but this coral is great for switching things up every once in a while, and goes great with my tan!

With these great pick-ups I am A LITTLE more excited for summer, though I’m still dreading that humidity! What great deals have you come across this season?
