Puppies Worried About Sequestration

If you’ve ever wondered what happens when you google “Sequester + Puppies” – fear no more, I have the answer. It is this.

Being in DC, we’ve obviously been hearing non-stop about sequestration over the past few days and this adorable buzzfeed article with puppies definitely helped make light of it.  So regardless of how you feel about the sequester, or what side of the aisle you happen to be on, I think we can all agree that puppies make everything better.

Here’s to hoping we make it through tomorrow!

Urbana’s Bottomless Brunch

One of my roommates had mentioned a few weeks ago that she experience a brunch place, so magical that they had a juice bar entirely devoted to mixing your most favorite mid-afternoon cocktail. So seeing as my roommates had some guests and I’m really happy with any excuse to brunch we met in Dupont for our 1:15pm seating at Urbana and ended up staying until 4:30!!! Needless to say it was delish.

First things first, when you sit down and announce that you’ll be participating in their $18.50 bottomless deal you are greeted by bottles upon bottles of champagne on your table. You can refill as you please and the waiters will help you out from time to time regardless if you’re ready or not. Now, here is the genius part — you fill your glass 2/3 full with champagne and then you stroll over to the juice bar where you find this:

(picture from Mango&Tomato, I forgot to take my own!)

Grapefruit, Cranberry, Pineapple, Orange, Strawberry, Cherry, Lychee.. the list goes on and you can mix and match as you please..

mmmm

By the time you’ve finished a glass (maybe 2 or 3…) food arrives!

yes that thing in the middle of the plate is cheesy potatoes and yes, its amazing

And as you continue to eat and down your bubbly drinks the hours just seem to fly by…all 3 of them! We actually we the 2nd to last table left before the dinner crowd, and the last table was just waiting for us to leave so they could win. Who knew it was a competition??

Urbana also had fabulous wine specials on happy hour  and gourmet pizza (or so I’ve been told) so be sure to check them out!

I giggled at it on the way out..and stole this picture shhhh thank you troublesome triangle!

Pleasant Pops Farmhouse

I FINALLY made it to Adams Morgan, you guys! After almost 6 months of living in DC, I can finally say that I have been to what many people consider the most hip and happening part of the city (and my usage of the terms ‘hip’ and  ‘happening’ probably just proved why I don’t belong there).

But even though I am mostly a grandma at heart, I ventured out last Friday upon a suggestion from my friend Annah. We had really been craving some hot chocolate, and it was a cold, rainy night…so it was perfect. The place was called Pleasant Pops Farmhouse Market & Cafe.

pops

inside the market

The gist of this place (or at least why we went) is that they provide you with a cup of base liquid (milk for us) and a stick of whatever ingredients to stir into the base (like chocolate). If that is the most confusing description ever, which I’m pretty sure it may be, check out the pictures below for some clarity:

milk before stirring (and my finger in the corner…oops)

20130226-102858.jpg

the “pop” part – a block of chocolate on a stick.

It was honestly the coolest thing. There were so many options, too! They have over 100 flavors – everything from cookies n cream to pina colada. Annah and I both decided on the Mexican Hot Chocolate – inspired by Danny from The Mindy Project, which I am obsessed with (obviously…a hilarious AND gorgeous Indian? Can I just be her please?).

And they’re super sustainable/environmentally friendly and support local businesses & farmers – so if you’re into that, that could also be a draw. Admittedly, I’m mostly just into hot chocolate. But it is kinda cool to see a totally DC-based company succeeding! You can find them at their Adam’s Morgan location, at farmers’ markets when in season, or on their moving truck “Big Poppa” – just follow @pleasantpops on Twitter!

messy but delicious

They also have food if you want to make a meal of it – I HIGHLY suggest the grilled cheese! If you’re looking for something fun and new in DC, this is definitely worth stopping in!

Vanilla Toffee Dip

I’m not actually sure what to call this dip…and I haven’t perfected the recipe yet (can you ever really, completely perfect a recipe…?), but this is how I spent my Saturday night:

20130225-115938.jpg

yummm

I’ve recently been trying to branch out from my usual chocolate and cookies recipes and do some more unique stuff.  And this dip is definitely different than most things I’m used to making. It’s really sweet for a dip and makes a great and unique dessert!

What you’ll need:
– 6 oz cream cheese  (pictured below is an 8 oz package)
– 1 cup brown sugar (loose)
– 2 tsp vanilla extract
– Heath toffee bits

the few simple ingredients

Directions:

1. Mix cream cheese and brown sugar in a small bowl

before mixing

2. Stir in vanilla extract and mix until smooth

3. Figure out what you want to dip in it!

so many delicious gala apples

sliced up and ready to dip

4. Sprinkle bits of toffee on top

not sure why we switched to green apples…

Try it out, tweak it, and let us know what you think!

National Nutella Day

Full disclosure….I’ve had this post drafted and ready to go for a couple weeks now…but with all the travelling and stuff I’ve been doing, I never actually got around to finishing it. So here it goes:

First of all, I’d like to dedicate this post to our friend Steve, who we went to school with, who recently told me that my recipes were too easy not to try. Which is probably one of the best baking compliments I’ve ever received …since that’s pretty much what I’m always aiming for. I don’t necessarily have the time (or patience) to make anything extravagant, so I try to take simple recipes and add a little twist. My most recent endeavor may be my new favorite…

Most of you probably didn’t know that National Nutella Day was a few weeks ago (Feb 5th to be exact) so I decided to celebrate my making some funfetti cookies stuffed with the delicious hazelnut spread.

Here’s what you’ll need:

 – 1 Box of Funfetti Cake Mix
– 2 Eggs
– 1/3 Cup Vegetable Oil
– 1 Jar Nutella
 – 1 1/2 Teaspoons Vanilla Extract

Directions:
1. Place parchment paper on a cookie sheet

2. Scoop small, round balls of nutella onto the sheet

3. Freeze for 30-40 minutes

mmm nutellaaa

While the nutella is freezing, began preparing the cookie dough.

4. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees

5. Mix together cake mix, vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla extract in a bowl and stir until combined

6. Take nutella out of the freezer and begin shaping the cookie dough around each nutella ball until no nutella is exposed

the surprise is inside!

7. Place back on cookie sheet
8. Bake 8-10 minutes
9. Eat and Enjoy

perfection!

You can make the nutella balls as big or small as you’d like – it depends on how big you want the cookies. I personally think I made mine too large and ended up only being able to get 15 good cookies out of the batch. But this was my first time making these – so if you try them and have any other tips and tricks, let me know (this means you, Steve & Fanny)! I’m hoping to make these a couple more times and tweak the recipe until I find something perfect!

So even though I’m late in posting this and it’s no longer National Nutella Day…..who really needs an excuse to eat nutella?

Up and Down the East Coast

In the past week I’ve gone from 86 degrees to 13 degrees. I started my week in Atlanta and then moved to Naples, FL before heading back to DC for 12 hours and taking off again for Philadelphia and Rochester, NY!

After a delayed flight, we arrived in Atlanta and stopped off at a Zaxby’s for some real southern fried chicken…and it did NOT disappoint. Atlanta was our best and most exciting event in my opinion – and I got to reunite with my roommate from the U of R who is living there now! We didn’t have much time, but we did get to catch up a little and it was so refreshing to see a familiar and encouraging face!

Image

Our award-winning costume from D’Lion year – Cowboys and Indians (hah – get it?)

In Florida we stayed at a resort in Coconut Point, where we were offered complimentary mimosas or champagne upon check-in…um, that’s my kind of establishment! Luckily the hotel grounds were gorgeous, because we didn’t have all too much time to explore the surrounding area….but we didn’t need it with this surrounding us:

Image

the treeeeees!

Then it was back to DC for the last Presidents’ Tour event. Though I was stressed and tired from working all week, mostly I was sad to see it end! The tour was so fun and I got so close to all my coworkers that it was disappointing to see it all end.

But I didn’t have too much time to dwell on the sadness. After our celebratory lunch, I headed up to PA. Back in Philly, I got to search for a bridesmaid dress for my friend Jenn’s wedding in September. I’ve never even been to a wedding, so this was totally new and exciting territory for me! We went to Alfred Angelo’s and after trying on a couple of different options, Jenn decided on this one:

Image

And finally I arrived in Rochester Saturday night, where I spent the rest of the weekend catching up with my family and friends from school. One of the highlights was getting to go out to my favorite Rochester bar, Mex, with a bunch of friends.

Image

Reunited with AKPsi!

And Sunday night I had a reunion with my former summer housemates. Though we hadn’t all been together in over a year, we spent the entire night reminiscing about old times and catching up on all our exciting current lives.

Image

So much love!

I also got to have a movie marathon with the rents and even painted my dad’s keys so he could tell them apart using the method I posted about here earlier! But this time I left out the glitter…

Anyway, it’s off to bed for now (finally)! Hopefully I can spend this week catching up on everything I missed while I was gone!

Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Happy (belated) Valentines Day!

Hopefully you did something nice with someone you love– whether it be a friend, boyfriend/girlfriend or four-legged friend!

Last year I received one of those edible arrangement bouquets which are great to send if you can’t be there in person, however I found that after a day all the lovely chocolate covered fruit had become quite gross. After Shiannes post about chocolate filled strawberries, I decided it can’t be that hart to make my own chocolate covered ones!

and…. viola!

hungry yet??

Alright so the secret to these guys is that while they seem fancy, they’re actually the easiest thing you could ever possibly make. Next time I may even try tuxedo style just to make it a little more complicated.

You will need:

-1 5oz bag of semi sweet chocolate chips
-Strawberries
-wax paper

yes thats it!

Directions:

1. Melt your chocolate — you can do this either in the microwave by going in 15 second increments and mixing each time or over the stove on low. I went the microwave route but next time I think stove to make sure the chocolate stays melted.
2. Dip your strawberry and place on wax paper
3. place in the fridge to harden
4. Eat!

You’ll impress all, be happily satisfied with your dessert and even feel a little romantic.

Enjoy!

Is it cherry blossom season yet?

I don’t know if its because it was randomly a beautiful day outside yesterday, or because it was 70 degrees out last week but I suddenly have spring fever. I want it to be warm! The days to be long! To finally use the pool outside of my apartment!

In lieu of actual spring time, since I probably have 2 months or so to wait, here are just some things I’m lusting at for the time being all from ASOS and Top Shop. ( If you havent online shopped from ASOS.. you don’t know what you’re missing!)

Ted’s Bulletin Brunch & Boss-man

There is just something about brunch that makes it my absolute favorite meal option. You can get breakfast, you can get lunch, you can get drinks, and dessert and no one judges on way or the other. In fact you’re really not trying hard enough if you don’t get some semblance of all three. Shianne and I decided to give this a try when we met up with a couple friends for their first (my second) time dining at the famous Ted’s Bulletin near the Marine Baracks!

First thing you should know about teds, there WILL be a wait, something north of an hour usually but luckily eastern market is just a skip across Pennsylvania Ave so you can easily spend your time looking at all the goods and taste testing some of the fruits and spreads.

Second, when you finally get a chance to sit down and look at the menu, you’re going to be overwhelmed. We kept laughing that this was the worst decision ever because whatever we did decide to get, we’d be leaving over something equally as delicious! Some of the famous options? Peanut Butter Burger, Home Made Pop-Tarts and  Alcoholic Milk Shakes.

Third, the president eats there.

Are you sold yet?

We managed to order completely backwards..

Our poptart choices– cinnamon sugar, blueberry cheesecake and strawberry!

a real closeup to make your mouth water

Mocha and Peppermint “adult” shakes

Shianne was smart and took a picture of her meal, I got just too hungry!

(I stole this from google) But here is my T.U.B.S. — teds ultimate breakfast sandwich complete with fried egg, scrambled egg, bacon, sausage, american and cheddar cheese. YES.

I believe we were all too full to stand afterwards!

Shianne walked around D.C. to show her visiting friend from the great white north, Morgan and it was a beautiful day here while everyone was dealing with nemo

is that Morgan??

My next morning was spent at a Lucky Dog adoption event and I just had to share with you all this little (or should I say big..) tub of love, Boss.

the bossman!

This guy was left to die with no food or water for weeks on end from a previous owner and was finally rescued on the brink of starvation and given a second chance at life. Even with such a sad situation, all he wants to do is hang out, snuggle and give you a drooly kiss. Hes gained back 40 lbs so far and has another 10 to go before hes at fighting weight, but helping him out was an amazing experience and I can’t wait to hear that he’s found his fur-ever home!

just hanging around

He was so happy & content in the car that he actually refused to get out and had to be carried.. until next time big fella!
